So I know a lot of people are doing this tonight, but I figured it would be some good practice. I'm going to blog about The Grammy Awards as they happen. Whenever something interesting happens, I'll add to this blog. Right now it is 7:41, and the show should be getting under way around 8:00. I've never actually watched the Grammys, which is strange because I love award shows. I think it helps that Arcade Fire are playing tonight. Maybe that's why I'm interested. Anyways, let's get ready for this.
8:04 - So we have a pretty diverse group here. Christina needs to focus. She doesn't want to screw this up. She sounds great. Whoo.
8:07 - Florence isn't messing around here. Look at that gold mic! And she ripped it right off the stand.
8:10 - Shows you how much I know about modern soul music. Just had to Google Yolanda Adams. But I'm really enjoying this medley. Each of these women are bringing it.
8:20 - Best Performance by Duo or Group. I can't explain to you how much I hate "Hey Soul Sister" by Train. And since when is Paramore pop? I guess power pop counts. But yeah, can't say I'm surprised this won.
8:23 - Here's Lady Gaga. Introduced by Ricky Martin. Coming out of the egg was really cool, and this dance number is fantastic. She looks really fantastic right now, and I'm enjoying "Born This Way" more than I did Friday when I listened to it for the first time.
8:34 - I hate country, so I know this won't be fair. But performances like this one from Miranda Lambert have kept me from watching The Grammys in the past. There's nothing wrong with it. She doesn't sound bad or anything, I just really can't stand country.
8:38 - If Muse's performance is crazier than Lady Gaga's, I'll be super happy.
8:41 - Trying to decide if this is cool or ridiculous.......should a rock band have dancers? I'm gonna say no.
8:47 - They've given one award so far. We're almost an hour in.
8:52 - Just switched to black & white. Kind of a cool effect, and I must admit I like Bruno Mars more than some other contemporary pop artists. But not a lot more. This is a good throwback performance though. Hopefully Janelle Monae will follow it up with something special.
8:56 - And she does. "Cold War" is an amazing song. And the guitars are rocking it. Bruno Mars on drums? Nice. They're really bringing the heat.
8:58 - Getting the second award of the night in in the first hour. Best Female Country Vocal. Since when did Jewel go country? Miranda Lambert wins for "The House That Built Me." Heard this song about a half hour ago, and I have to say that if this is the best Country song of the year, I'm very disappointed in the genre.
9:05 - I'm about to see Justin Bieber sing. This will be a first for me. Bracing myself.
9:06 - Why does this staged conversation seem so creepy?
9:07 - The Biebster is giving me a Nick Carter vibe. Maybe it's cause I grew up in the 90s, but if his career crashes like that guy, I wouldn't be too surprised. Didn't the Carters have a reality show on E?
9:10 - Oh the benefits of being Will Smith's son. I thought his daughter was the singer....
9:13 - Best Rock Album. Pearl Jam better get a win up in here. Nope, Muse. So tempted to turn this off....
9:21 - Best Pop Vocal Album goes to Lady Gaga for The Fame Monster. That was pretty much an EP and it beat Justin Bieber. And her face looks like a mask. Am I the only one who thinks this?
9:25 - Love Mumford & Sons. And Marcus Mumford loves him some vest.
9:28 - One of the few people I know that has yet to get into The Avett Brothers. But there's some cello shredding going on, which I can dig. And the lead singer actually looks like a Followill brother....anyone?
9:31 - Love seeing how excited these guys are at performing with Bob. This might be my favorite performance of the night.
9:39 - I want to hear a Julie Andrews/Ramones collaboration.
9:41 - Another country performance I'm going to refrain from bashing. Lady Antebellum. But I feel like they're just taking phrases from the Country songbook dictionary: "Amercan," "drunk," "wild wind." Wild wind is just something I picture being talked about in a lot of Country tunes. I'm not really sure if it's widely used.
9:44 - How the hell did Kings of Leon get roped into presenting Best Country Album with Miley Freaking Cyrus? I really hope this wasn't something they agreed to by choice. Oh, and Lady Antebellum wins. In case anyone was wondering. But that's not really this issue right now.
9:47 - Cee Lo Green with The Muppets? This is automatically up for performance of the night. Just sing "fuck" time he sings "forget," and it'll sound better. Guaranteed.
9:50 - Gwyneth Paltrow is singing. She's not horrible, but why is she at The Grammys? Confused?
9:54 - Mumford & Sons, Avett Brothers, and Bob Dylan are still in the lead. Arcade Fire, can you beat it?
9:58 - Katy Perry is sitting on a rising swing. Oh my God! Wedding clips! This just made my freaking night. Way to show us your home movies on national television. This clip is going to be so much better when the divorce is finalized.
10:02 - I can dig Norah Jones doing "Jolene," but is anyone else kind of wishing The White Stripes didn't just break up so they could do their version?
10:05 - Song of the Year. (The song otherwise known as "Forget You") is the best nominee ever. But no, "Need You Now" by Lady Antebellum nabs it. Where's Kanye?
10:13 - Can't lie. I'm excited for this Eminem performance. I like this song. Haters are gonna hate on me.
10:16 - The intensity in this performance from Eminem is impressive.
10:20 - Best New Artist. Crossing my fingers for Florence & The Machine. I know it probably won't happen.....Esperanza Spalding. Another artist who I don't know of, but am willing to looking up. Thank God it wasn't Justin Bieber.
10:31 - Paying artists for their work. I know a bunch of people are going to roll their eyes at this, but people should really think about that.
10:32 - The In Memorium segment. These always get me. Ronnie James Dio, rock on. As well as all the others. I love that they give all genres their due.
10:35 - Mick Jagger paying tribute to Solomon Burke. This guy will never change, but his voice has still got it. He make look like a bag of bones dancing around onstage, but he still holds onto his true talent. It's pretty amazing. I would totally see the Stones in concert today. The music still rocks.
10:46 - Kris Kristofferson has always reminded me of Jeff Bridges. It started as a kid and I still can't help but seeing it. And I've actually seen Barbara Streisand perform. I might be wrong, but is she lip synching? Someone tell me.
10:50 - I've been informed that she isn't. Apparently I'm a bad judge of these things.
10:51 - Nikki Minaj's outfit follows Barbara Streisand. Best Rap Album here we go. Eminem is my guess....yep. But I'll admit that I cheated. I already knew that everyone was picking Eminem.
10:54 - I'm fading here. This thing better end soon. Can we skip Drake and go into Arcade Fire?
10:57 - I want to believe that they are saving Arcade Fire for last because they are the best live band around right now. But I can't help thinking it's because indie fans might be watching for once, and they want to string them along until the very end.
11:00 - Rihanna and Drake. Both songs featuring Rihanna have had fire on the stage. This performance seems crazy inappropriate. Also has the biggest chance of a wardrobe malfunction.
11:02 - J-Lo and Marc Anthony. They're just awkward presenters. But here we go. Record of the Year. "Empire State of Mind," is my guess....."Need You Now." Again. I quit.
11:11 - ARCADE FIRE. Worth the wait already. "Month of May." Surprised.
11:13 - The biker cams are actually pretty awesome. And a nice reference to the Spike Jonze short film that is going to be coming out.
11:16 - So I know Arcade Fire probably won't win Album of the Year. But if Lady Antebellum gets another award, I vow to never watch The Grammys again.
11:22 - Here we go. Album of the Year. From everything I've heard, Eminem is the favorite. We'll see.....THE SUBURBS! WORTH IT! THIS WHOLE THING HAS BEEN WORTH IT!
11:24 - Sorry about the caps. But they're playing another song, and I'm so freaking happy. "Ready To Start." It's perfect, and this is what people need to know. Arcade Fire are defining what music should be right now. It's full of life. And just look at how happy they are that they won!
11:28 - They're cutting Arcade Fire off, which is a little frustrating. But they got to play two songs. What an amazing night for them. I'm so happy.
11:30 - After three and a half hours, it's over. There were some definite high points, along with some lows. I just hope some people who didn't know who Arcade Fire is can now realize just how talented the band is. Thanks to everyone who read this throughout the night, and I hope I didn't bore you too badly.
Gwyneth sang this song on Glee, bro. This collab's been in the works for a while.
ReplyDeleteAnd you never got into the Avetts before this? Son, I am disappoint.
I read about that collaboration! But is it Grammy worthy? Why is she suddenly a singer?
ReplyDelete"Country Strong"? I know your aversion to country, but she sang one of the biggest songs in film this year. That's wassup.
ReplyDeleteI'll give her "Country Strong." But her crawling on the piano, singing with Cee Lo....I don't know. It kind of ruined the performance for me.
ReplyDelete@Chris, Suddenly a singer via Chris Martin (a la Jack White/Karen Elson).
ReplyDeleteVery true. Nice comparison!
ReplyDeleteDuring Arcade Fire, my mom said, "Do they have Shaun White on the megaphone?" :)
